We got to meet the Consul General, which was super cool. He came out and introduced himself to each one of us. Since it was such a small group, we all had good one-on-one conversations.<\/p><p data-start=\"3922\" data-end=\"4351\">We observed at least two live visa interviews. We saw how the officers conducted the interviews, how they processed everything, and even got a peek behind the scenes at the technology they use. From the moment someone keys in their DS-160, the system analyzes the data. If anything\u2019s missing, the application gets flagged. Then, a second officer reviews it to decide whether to grant an interview waiver or schedule an interview.<\/p><p data-start=\"4353\" data-end=\"4659\">When we were in the interview room, I noticed officers had cheat sheets to their left. They were color-coded. The Consul General made it clear they couldn\u2019t give us a copy of these sheets, but every officer had one. Most don\u2019t need to use them\u2014they\u2019ve memorized the contents\u2014but they\u2019re there just in case.<\/p><p data-start=\"4661\" data-end=\"4959\">One surprising thing was how final each officer\u2019s decision is. Unless it\u2019s a matter of law, no one\u2019s going to second-guess it. It\u2019s kind of like a jury system: we\u2019re using regular people, with their own life experiences, to adjudicate visas. Your job is to get into their mindset and convince them.<\/p><p data-start=\"4961\" data-end=\"5190\">A 20-year-old officer versus a 40-year-old, or someone who\u2019s traveled the world versus someone from a small town\u2014they all have different baselines for what\u2019s \u201cnormal.\u201d Officers try to be consistent, but their perspectives matter.<\/p><p data-start=\"5192\" data-end=\"5424\">That\u2019s why I found it so interesting that in a recent E-2 visa case, the first officer denied it. But when the client reapplied for a B1\/B2, the second officer said, \u201cLooks like the first officer made a mistake. We\u2019ll approve both.\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"5426\" data-end=\"5446\">That rarely happens.<\/p><p data-start=\"5448\" data-end=\"5555\">After the tour, we had a Q&amp;A session with the Consul General and his assistant. We covered a lot of ground:<\/p><ul data-start=\"5557\" data-end=\"5818\"><li data-start=\"5557\" data-end=\"5618\"><p data-start=\"5559\" data-end=\"5618\">For TN visas, bringing original documentation is important.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5619\" data-end=\"5673\"><p data-start=\"5621\" data-end=\"5673\">Interview prep is key\u2014train your clients thoroughly.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5674\" data-end=\"5818\"><p data-start=\"5676\" data-end=\"5818\">The Consul General even said if he ran a law firm, he\u2019d build a station just like a consulate or CBP interview room so clients could practice.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"5820\" data-end=\"6035\">On whether you need original documentation for a B1\/B2: the answer is usually no. Copies are fine. But what\u2019s more important is <strong data-start=\"5948\" data-end=\"5987\">being able to explain yourself well<\/strong>\u2014your intent, home ties, and purpose in the U.S.<\/p><p data-start=\"6037\" data-end=\"6191\">This tour opened my eyes. Our job isn\u2019t just pushing paper. It\u2019s helping people adapt to this ever-changing system and communicate clearly through it all.<\/p><p data-start=\"6193\" data-end=\"6302\">If you ever get the chance to attend an embassy tour, do it. You\u2019ll see how government systems actually work.<\/p><p data-start=\"6304\" data-end=\"6438\">And honestly? As great as the insights were, the best part of the trip was the people I met. Officers operate with discretion, and what may seem like a small difference in how a client presents themselves can be the deciding factor between approval and denial.<\/p><p data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2358\">We\u2019ve seen this play out before. A client\u2019s E-2 visa was denied, but upon reapplying for a B1\/B2 visa, a different officer reversed the previous denial and approved <em data-start=\"2234\" data-end=\"2240\">both<\/em> the B1\/B2 and the E-2.
